In about two weeks, Saturday October 21st to be exact, some friends and I are getting together to put on an electronic media show at Open Space. Scheinwerfer (Zurich, Switzerland), NUTHRE (Saskatoon, Victoria), i send data live (Victoria), Channel 10 (Victoria), Steve Gibson (Victoria) and Randy Adams (Nanimo) will all be there with their Sunday best. It’s going to be freakin’ awesome so you better show up. Yeah, you.

Tonight we (as in the royal Channel10, “we”) had a kind of one-off/dress rehearsal for October 21st with isenddatalive at the ISMIR conference. We did about a half hour of improvisation followed by two numbers from early this year, Lansky and The Female Body. Our back-up system tanked, but luckily Big Boy (this amped up PC that could turn diamonds into dust) didn’t crash at all. It was strange being back at the Empress’ Crystal Ballroom. The last time I was there was on my birthday for a wine tasting and I… well, it was a helluva night.

One last reminder about my video at Antimatter this Saturday. This is Box/This is Machine is another piece about technology created after I read a few lines of The Californian Ideology… it went something like, In the digital utopia, everybody will be both hip and rich.

The promises of digital technology have colonized our lives in so many ways and in such quantity they have become transparent to all but the most hardened luddites. While the promise remains unfulfilled it grows ever more complex and less static with each passing day. Many presume that the etopia is little more than vaporware. As Kazys Varnelis puts it, “The parallel electronic universe, unchained from physical structures, simply does not exist.”

And yet we persist with the belief that technology will free us from our responsibilities, that it can better us in ways we cannot fully comprehend. It is a blind belief, one that breeds complacency with the modern condition and encourages the worship of science.

This collection is a speeding tunnel that connects the miniscule to the voluminous, where seeds hold entire cities, and whales have hearts the size of cars; where snowflakes are ice hotels and gravity is known to be the pull of a pearl at the centre of the world. As you vanish in and out of scenes, a fine silk thread spins out behind you, link-link-link.

It promises to be an interesting night of wine, cats and crackers.

This weekend is also a landmark one at the Metro Theatre (at least in my books), because Scott Thompson’s Scotastrophe is coming to town. Show starts at 8pm, tickets are $20 at Lyle’s Place.
Scottastrophe is basically a powerpoint presentation by Scott Thompson accompanied musically by Bob Wiseman and Magali Meagher. Like a good scientist, Scott steps back and investigates the unusual density of tragedy and surrealism to which he has been privy since ending The Kids in the Hall. Potential lawsuits about racism and sexual harassment on the set of Touched by an Angel, behind the scenes on The Larry Sanders Show and trying to play a straight man (or alien) on Star Trek. The firebombing of his Los Angeles home by inflamed supporters of Saddam Hussein. The near-death experience over Madagascar on an airplane probably populated by pedophiles. Insulting the Governer General of Ontario at the Griffin Poetry Awards by merely waving a very long, flexible prop. Naturally these things might be solved by finding the Hollow Earth Society, or else by giving a powerpoint presentation – you decide.

Tomorrow night Justin Love’s video “My New Body” is playing at Antimatter Film Festival (510 Fort Street at Open Space) during the 7pm show. This weekend, on the final night of Antimatter, Saturday September 30th, my latest *finished* work will be screening at 5pm. I haven’t had a blog on navigammatron for a while, but as the pace of things is picking up in Victoria lately I thought it might be a good time to get back into it. This blog integrates my old Gallery 2 photo gallery/portfolio into a WordPress blog. The template I’m currently using is called plaintxtBlog by Scott. Thanks Scott! Both Gallery and WordPress are pretty simple php applications that use a mysql database to organize data. They’re pretty sweet.
